Mist netting training with students

Recently, we participated in two mist netting workshops organized by the Biology Students Association (http://bius.hr/) as part of their research and education projects: Biological Camp – Karin 2024 and Nightflyers of Tounj 2024. These workshops aimed to train students from BIUS, as well as colleagues from Oikon and Supernatural, providing them with valuable skills in bat research and conservation. Both workshops were led by trained professionals from The Association for Bat Conservation Tragus and Supernatural.
We demonstrated how to select optimal locations for setting up mist nets and the proper techniques for installing them. Participants learned gentle bat handling methods to safely release them from the nets, minimizing stress and the chances of injury. They also learned how to discern and measure morphological traits essential for species identification.
Thank you to the BIUS Chiroptera Section for choosing us as your mentors. It is always a pleasure to share our knowledge and passion with interested students!
Please note that we are vaccinated and trained to properly handle bats – do not attempt to do this yourself, as you could hurt both the bats and yourself.
