The developement of Sensitivity Maps for Solar and Wind Energy Development in Croatia

Dec 17, 2024

Did you know that Sensitivity Maps for Solar and Wind Energy Development in Croatia have been made?
The results of a significant project that supports renewable energy development (RES) while respecting the strategic goals of Nature protection and Climate and Energy goals were presented this week.Sensitivity maps were made as a technical tool to help identify possible renewable acceleration areas (RAA; RED III).

What these maps enable?
• Spatial information for the placement of non-integrated solar and wind power plants with minimal impact on nature.
• They enable faster and more transparent decision-making
• They directly support national and EU energy transition goals.

Starting December 20, the maps will be available on BioPortal, with open-source code on GitHub to ensure long-term usability and possible future updates.

This project was made possible through collaboration between The Nature Conservancy, the Hrvoje Požar Energy Institute, and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition.

Our team at Supernatural is proud to have provided a leading Bat Expert in the development of bat sensitivity maps and contributed to defining bat ecology, validating species distribution predictions, distribution models and sensitivity maps.
Other groups included working colleagues from Geonatura and the IBIS Program (birds) and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine University of Zagreb (large carnivores). A heartfelt thank you to all the partners for collaborating on this important project. Together, we’ve shown that innovation and teamwork can create a brighter, more sustainable future for all!
